When using the Table Design dialog to create or modify a table, the
default value for the Length property of a given Field Type is not
used. This occurs when a field's Field Type is change to another and
then changed back.
Specifically, this is true for Text [VARCHAR] and Text [CHAR].
Examples: Create a table in Design View (opens the Table Design
dialog). Enter a name for a field. The Field Type is automatically
listed as Text [VARCHAR] Note the Length property. Change the Field
Type to Yes/No [BOOLEAN]. The Length property changes to 1. Change the
Field Type back to Text [VARCHAR]. The Length property remains 1.
Change the Field Type to Binary [BINARY] and not the Length. Now
change the Field Type back to Text [VARCHAR]. The Length property does
not change.
Hi Dan,
This is an old behavior of OOo I submitted this as enhancement in 2009,
see: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=106964
No solution happens from that time. It is annoying for the first time
user. A little more experienced Base user, who is design tables, can be
aware for this, at least it needs to mention in Base guide somewhere.
The table design contains, the determination of fields sizes, the
default sizes is a help, but in most cases is useless, if you know what
are your needs.
This and similar UI tricks made Base harder to use than needed.

This is also a bug in LO going back at least as far as 3.4.4. A bug
report has been filed: Bug #53591. View it here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53591 for possible
additional information.
