Let's first try files for storage & then raw partitions, as it appears that you (or 
the system) try to use /dev/hda4 as a normal file, which it isn't quite

Raw Partition's gains are about only in the non caching of the I/O, as the 
RDMBS is doing it, and double caching in those cases are a waste.
