All -

I thought I would put together a status report since I have now been
trying to get the new test build machine set up over the last 3 days.
The results are very mixed.

First, VMware Server 2 will not work under Fedora 9, period. You can
install the rpm but you can not configure the install afterwards. And
there is no update currently that will allow that to succeed. A real bummer.

So I installed RHEL 5.2 as the base OS. VMware Server 2 is ok with this OS.

Next I tried installing Fedora 9 as a guest. No go. It will not even
boot. So I installed RHEL 5.2 as a guest and that worked. I have not
tried other versions of Linux yet.

Next I tried setting up a Windows XP guest. That goes ok but when I
tried installing the Visual Studio 2003 it complains that there is an
incorrect DVD in the drive and will not complete the install. I am not
sure what to do from here.

Mark - can I download the Visual Studio install from the web? If so
please give me a URL and I will try that.

So this is taking a lot longer than I had hoped.

And VMware Server 2 is a LOT different from the previous version.
Everything about administering the guests is done through a web
interface (your browser). It works pretty well but it takes some getting
used to. But it will mean easier maintenance in the long run. And easier
access for the team to the VM guests.

I still have not even tested the VIX APIs yet. I will get to that pretty
soon.
