It's good that you did this.

I had been basing my claim that the Express edition would work fine on
my belief that a guy I know was using the Express to compile the
interpreter.  I just found out a few days ago that he was actually
using VC++ 6.0.

I had successfully used the Express edition about 3 years ago to
compile the interpreter, but I hadn't done it recently.  I was getting
ready to install it on a system to double check.  Now I won't have to.
