I'm not sure I understand what you are doing, you might need to provide a real example.
However, this just could be a case of the fact that the trace settings are saved/restored whenever a call out of any context is made, so turning trace off in a routine only effects that routine. If tracing was on in the caller, you will be back in interactive trace upon return.
