I agree that it is indeed a serious problem with those GCC versions, but you 
mentioned:

"On both the i386 and x86_64 versions on SLES 11 the problem is with the 
version of gcc used (4.5?). None of the other Linux distributions are using 
that version"

SLES 11 does NOT use any of the gcc versions listed in the bug. As I said 
earlier, SLES 11 uses 4.3.2. SLES 11sp1 uses 4.3.4.

Looking at the comments of the bug you mentioned, I also see this:

"Repository:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/gcc/openSUSE_Factory/";

Which means he installed the newer GCCs from openSUSE Factory. These are 
experimental, and not meant for production.

Are you sure this problem is related with building on SLES?
