just double-checked with a fresh install off the MacOSX-DVD: after
installing the operating system (in a VirtualBox virtual machine) there
is no make nor gcc or the like. These seem to be installed with
installing Xcode, which is a separate step. So it may be the case that
newer plain-vanilla versions of MacOSX computers do not have the
development tools installed.
