This is great info, thank you Mike, and especially thank you Simon!

Would there be a chance to get the Oryx logo somehow? Having tried in the past years a few times, I was never able to get a hold of it.

Simon, would you have a copy of the Oryx logo that you could share by any chance? If not, could you please ask Dave Renshaw? It would be nice if we could use it for the ooRexx project!

Ad file extensions: yes, having two may be irritating, however we already have more than two file extensions: .rex, .cls, .orx, .rexp, ... They are used for file associations in operating systems like Windows, macOS, Linuxes, associating files with these extensions with oorexx, actually, rexx.exe/rexx which clashes with other Rexx interpreters which use rexx.exe as their launcher. The idea of adding ".oryx" to this set was to hint at the original name (denoting an elegant animal, as many other programming languages would also use an animal logo). Having the Oryx logo would allow to associate it in addition with the operating systems such that the explorer/finder programs would use the logo when listing ooRexx files (this of course would need an agreement among the ooRexx developer community). Personally, I would like to see the Oryx logo at lest on the documentation (but again, this would need an agreement among the ooRexx developer community)

Thanks, Mike!

The name Oryx was chosen by Ian Brackenbury, the manager who recruited me to work on the project. The lovely Oryx logo was created by Dave Renshaw. I did my best to see the Oryx name retained but as the project approached product status, the influence of corporate naming standards led to the choice of the name OREXX (Object REXX) which later became OOREXX (Open Object REXX).

I think the extension .orx is ideal because it combines elements of all the above names. I think it's better to have one extension rather than a choice of two which is likely to lead to confusion.

Best regards,
Simon

Subject: [Oorexx-devel] Ad ooRexx file types ...

In a discussion a couple of weeks ago in the context of cREXX it was

proposed that each Rexx language would use a proper file extension, if the

contained code can only be run by that language, hence ".crexx". In that

discussion, it also became clear that a proper extension for ooRexx programs

should be used if the program could only be executed by ooRexx.

We already have an extension ".orx" that we could use (associated with the

operating system during installation), hence suggesting to use that

extension for any new Rexx programs that can only be run by ooRexx.

    ---

In this context, another idea, suggestion: if not mistaken, one of the

project names at IBM when developing "Object REXX" was "oryx". There used to

be an oryx logo on the OS/2 developer CDs, if I recall correctly. (Back

then, quite a few programming languages would use an animal as their logo.)

Nowadays, not being confined to FAT 8.3 file names anymore, how about

supporting an optional filetype named ".oryx"? Any comments?
