Bob,

I agree with you.  There are plenty of things in the current usage of the 
language that grate on my nerves, and cause me to grit my teeth.   Language is 
either living and changing, or dead.  We have a living language, Latin is dead. 
 I believe that 'data' is currently both singular and plural depending on 
context.

I say "waiting in line" my daughter says "waiting on line".  I say 'on purpose 
/ by accident' my daughter says 'on purpose / on accident'.  Both of these 
grate on my nerves, but are common in the current usage.  There is also the 
amazing rate at which nouns are changing into verbs.  Don't believe me?  Go 
google it.
