This looks like a bad bug.  Whether you made a mistake or not, it shouldn't
crash.  ;-)

You can open a bug report if you want, it's nice to track these things.

No problem, it is a kind of interesting scenario.  I'm using the program I
posted to implement a working solution.  It is far enough along to see that
a pretty good solution is doable.  I'll post it later.
