Well, I now compiled it by hand from the sources.  I only had to (find out and)
edit src/c/Makefile to change

  strip something

to

  strip something.exe

Took me only half an hour :-(.

I wholeheartedly agree that noweb should be built separately (I do this on
linux), and for MS Windows there should be a binary.

But it seems that the other problems I have with sockio are more severe (see
other post).
