You sound like you should try XFig. It's almost as old as I am, it's simple, and the interface takes a little getting used to (nothing major, mainly grab-drag-drop rather than drag-'n'-drop, that is you don't hold the mouse button while dragging) but it works _and_ it has a library with electronics symbols. It exports to PS as well as a buch of bitmap formats. It is also a vector drawing app rather than a graph editor, so it doesn't get in your way. Almost all Linux distributions have it in stock.
