It's cool that you're doing this. My priority right now is verifying

Absolutely, I'm not suggesting that changing tools is a good idea
(infact, it's rarely a good idea to change tools mid-project) - merely
that as an open source project (if I read you right, you really want
everything nice and open) having this sort of thing available is A Good
Thing.
Note that I believe the reason Howard chose to use proprietary tools
was that be felt that the artwork would require more PCB layers than
are supported by the open tools. Just keep this in mind if you decide
to take on the challenge of converting the artwork too.
(Hypothetically, it may be possible to do what we're doing with fewer
layers, but there are always signal integrity issues to consider.)
SI issues are something that can be dealt with in time, and initially i
think we're merely trying to duplicate what you've already got, not
improve on it. A good point about the layers, tho', I had a quick peek
at PCB and the current state, and this is what it told me:
"Flags are stored symbolically in the .pcb file. This is the start of
moving to support >8 layers. Please note that >8 layer support is not
yet available in this snapshot."

So, by the time we get around to actually putting the artwork down on
screen, they should have enough layers to deal with it =D
