I've been thinking about a standalone firewall box for home and SOHO.

Ethernet in for high-speed connections
RS-232 (large FIFO UART) in for POTS modems and setup

Ethernet out for LAN.
How many ports is the question.
  A single port?
  4 Gigabit plus 4 100 Mbps?
  Something bigger, and thus more expensive than necessary for many users?

OpenBSD on some read-only device for maximum security.
