May I input my 2 cents worth: While being able to physically modify the configuration and setup (removable/swappable EEPROMS) is a Good Thing to Have(tm), it's important to remember that remote configuation is also important. Not every piece of hardware is easily physically accessable, so having an effective means of changing configuration (by uploading/downloading a config file?) remotely would be fantastic (possibly even non-interactively). One could just use HTTP POST or something, along with authentication, to push new files to the router. Using HTTP means you have a well-supported protocol, which can easily be automated.
