The old mechanical voting machines had this.  There was a lever for
party A, a lever for party B, C, D, ...  Pulling this lever caused a
bunch of levers for individual candidates to flip.  If you wanted to
vote for everyone in party A except for one race, you could pull the
party A lever, then flip the one bad guy's lever back up and flip
down the lever for one of the opponents.

The user interface was pretty nice.

But:

The election officials could tell if someone voted a straight or
mostly straight ticket, because they didn't take as long to vote.

I assume these machine didn't have any way to do a recount.

And they sometimes started the day with thousands of votes
already recorded.

Not practical for absentee or other mail-in ballots.  Having the same
interface for all voters (okay blind voters are a special case) is
a good thing.  Some areas have mail-in for everyone, which has the
advantage that the voter can vote when and where it is convenient
for them.  And no standing in a voting booth wondering what to do
about the "surprise" races or ballet measures you didn't know about
ahead of time.
