What about a RAID card that uses the same on-disk format as Linux'
software raid? You could upgrade a Linux software RAID setup to a
hardware RAID setup with minimum hassle. Also, if the card breaks, Linux
software RAID would provide you with a fallback, so you could at least
get at your data that way (permanently or temporarily).
