I've encountered four-GPU Matrox cards where they put four separate
GPUs on one PCB and used a bridge to connect them.  That puts four
devices on the bus.  Put two such cards into one system, and you have
8 devices.  Actually, I've put three in a Sun workstation, under
Solaris, and got all 12 heads active at once.  [IIRC, that may have
required a modified X server, because Xsun was limited to 10.]

Systems intended for industrial/commercial use.  Usually such systems
are built with a passive backplane.
