I find that I need one and can't seem to find anything except the one
product from creative intended to work with their sound cards or more
expensive stuff like a Technics SHA-500D.
What I need is a box with a TosLink input and 6 analog line out for 5.1
surround sound (prefer the RCA jacks so I don't have to use special
cables). However, if we were to make this a product other stuff might
be a good idea -- SPDIF. For what I need, the only controls would be
on/off for the center channel and the crossover frequency for the
"effects" (sub woofer) including "0" (off). It is probably sufficient
to have Dolby Digital since that is what most TVs have for an output
although I understand that chips do other decodings as well.
There are two takes on this:
1. A basic system using a chip such as the CS42406. The reference
board has the product all but designed and ready to produce.
2. A higher end unit using DSPs for Hilbert transform and FIFOs for
delay. I really don't know much better this would be but some
audio nuts will buy anything (e.g. $100+ cables).
