It took me a while to figure out, but you do View->Master->Slide Master 
and then edit that. Then you save it as a template via File->Save to 
export it, and to use it you have to do File->Templates->Save and save 
it in My Templates. Then you can create a new document using it using 
the wizard. As far as I can see, you import a template from a file 
using File->Templates->Organise. How to apply a template to an existing 
presentation is described at

I seem to have created a slide design based on the Traversal website 
look. It's with my previous stuff at 
http://nova.student.utwente.nl/~lourens/gfx/opengraphics/oscon_2007_presentation_images/

After applying the template some editing is still necessary to get 
everything to look right; the font size will be too large and a few 
images need a bit of movement and scaling to get to the right place.

Now I just need to update the timeline graphic to match the colours, but 
I'm going to have some lunch first.
