I'll try to do a summary between the 2 chip. Fist of all, the logic cell value is a marketing number who should never be used. The V5SX50T is a chip containing 288 dsp block who are 25*18 multiplier with an adder and a accumulator as I understand it. There is 32640 LUT in the V5 but those LUT are 6 input and not the 4 found in the previous fpga generation. And it have 132 block ram of 36 kbites.

The S3-4000 is a chip with 96 multiplier 18*18 and also 96 block ram of 18 kbites. Also the chip contain 55312 LUT, the LUT are 4 entry. So for the comparaison both chip are about equivalent in the logic area. The spartan3 have more LUT but they are smaller the v5 have less but they are bigger. But being bigger doesn't mean you will use less of them, because depending of the logic the LUT is not always fully used. So for the LUT side of thing I could call it even. For the dsp/multiplier or the ram the V5 is the winner there is more of them and you don't have the exclusivity problem found in Spartan3. For the speed probably the spartan3 logic is going to run around 100MHz the V5 could probably get to 200Mhz. Also the spartan3 as more IO available 630 against 480 for the V5.

The remaining question is the price for each part. I would be ready to bet that the spartan3 is cheaper. Also the fact that we have a board already designed and tested for the spartan3.

That particular chip has fewer logic slices than the 4000, although it
does have these "DSP blocks" (which are basically just generalized
math blocks). Let's see if we can figure out how OGD1 and this board
differ so we can emphasize the advantages of OGD1. Of course, that's
only important for people who aren't FOSS enthusiasts. For those who
are, they will buy an OGD1 because it's a fund raiser. :)

It use the brand new virtex5 50 DSP sub version for 1200$, this dsp is
bigger than the spartan choosed.

The comments on linuxfr are mainly on the high price but they understand
why it's so high. Some guy try to compare with less expensive Xillinx board
but with a much smaller FPGA.
There are also questions about why everything is not free related to the
faq answer to the question "If I buy an OGD1 board and plug it into my PC,
will it work as a graphic card?"
Maybe i could give more explaination about hacking capabilites of the
board (game engine in full hardware or ....) to make them dream a little :)
If the board have numbers on them, i think some rich geek want have this
first "limited edition" :)
