Hum, it sounds to me like you're trying to write some sort of
reprogrammable data driven architecture, which is damn cool :) On the
topic of data driven architectures, I saw this cool reappearance of the
old systolic architecture with IO plane used for image processing[1].
I'm also thinking that if we were to go away from a render based approach
to ray tracing on the graphics platform, this will be a very interesting
line of research.
