Does anyone make simple cards with framebuffers and modern
VGA/DVI/HDMI/Displayport ports?

which is a graphics card that only uses 2 Watts. They also make a DVI version,
and low profile versions. Downside is that the resolution and color depth
are rather limited. Finding a place to buy one is another problem.

What if we designed a similar card, but with more resolution and color depth,
multiple heads, sockets for an optional future OGP GPU chip and memory,
and maybe a connector for an optional Broadcom Crystal HD video decoder?

Will DVI, s-video, HDMI, and Displayport all fit on one bracket?
That would give up to 5 heads (using a breakout cable for splitting
DVI-I into DVI-D and DVI-A).

Please do not do that. Users end up with using only one type of output and the others will be not used - resources are wasted. If you think of multiple heads - provide at least 2 of the same type of outputs, others can be done by conversion (either passive or active).

A DVI port (especially in dual-link variant) is quite nice, and it provides both analog VGA and you can use a passive HDMI adapter too.

With DisplayPort you can get a cheap VGA encoder and if you make it dualmode capable, you can get HDMI easily.

The only problem I fight with DP is how to connect there my older 30" screens... they got dual-link DVI input and an active DP adapter for that is rather expensive (it is cheaper to get a 2xDL-DVI card than one DP-DVI adapter).


Can we design the pinout of the OGP GPU chip before designing the
internals? Various chips, including rather complex CPUs are designed
to be pin-compatible with earlier designs, so it should be possible.

One way to do that is maybe to base the pinout on an FPGA.. but since going ASIC means lot of investment, cost of designing a new board is insignificant.
