I've been recently pointed at the EP2C5T144 boards from various sellers
on ebay for about 25USD (like [1] and [2]).

There is also a slightly different version with an EP4CE6E22 that is
only marginally more expensive (+5USD).

These FPGA boards are quite a bit less advanced than the DE0-nano,
but i think for simple tinkering and experimenting they should be
more than good enough. One drawback they have is, that you need
an additional programmer, while the DE0-nano has one onboard.

I have not tried them myself, and i know that buying stuff from
chinese ebay sellers always has some risk, but i think it would
be worth a try with that low price.
