There's an article in MICRO 2012, titled "Systematic Energy
Characterization of CMP/SMT Processor Systems via Automated
Micro-Benchmarks." I haven't been able to find it anywhere other than in
the complete proceedings at "
http://users.ece.cmu.edu/~omutlu/pub/MICRO2012-proceedings.pdf";.

Anyhow, it's a system for auto-generating microbenchmarks. The OpenShader
wiki already has another article on GPU micro benchmarks, but those are
hand-generated to determine GPU architectural characteristics like cache
sizes and latencies. MicroProbe generates benchmarks automatically to do
things like identify energy per instruction. This could be useful to us
for identifying the energy characteristics of existing GPUs as well as
optimizing our own.
