Hi,

In just a few short hours, the student application period for Google Summer of
Code 2012 will begin. If you're considering applying, please peruse the ideas
page [1] carefully, as it also describes our expectations of students and our
application requirements. In particular, I want to point out that we ask that
all applicants submit a patch or Git pull request that fixes a small bug in
Evergreen or adds a small enhancement. A list of "bite-size" bugs specifically
meant for folks new to Evergreen is available [2].

The purpose of our application requirement is to make sure that you can
successfully gain enough understanding of Evergreen's code to work effectively
on a larger project, but one thing to keep in mind is that you're not alone --
we recognize that Evergreen has a bit of a learning curve. If you're working
on a bite-size bug and have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. The
#evergreen IRC channel on Freenode is the best bet for quick response,
particularly during North American working hours, but you can also ask on this
mailing list, open-ils-dev.
