Thanks for the info Ben. This was very helpful to hear your experience, as we
will be moving to Evergreen 2.3 in the near future but our consortium has no
date set. Sounds like it will be worth waiting for the speed improvements you
mentioned rather than worry about the older version with Xulrunner 1.9.

This helps me a lot, as I’ll focus attention on trying 2.3 on a testing server
rather than beat a dead horse working on 2.2.

Thanks again!

 Hi Carl,

Yes, unfortunately we noted similar reaction times when using xulrunner 1.9
with older Evergreen versions. The most I ever learned about this was that
xulrunner 1.9 was just darned slow on Macs. Since it wasn't being supported by
Mozilla anymore, we never got to the bottom of it. The tendency at the time
was to work with newer xulrunner versions and hope for a brighter future.

That said, for whatever it's worth, once we upgraded to Evergreen 2.3+ and
started using the newer xulrunners (14+), we saw a dramatic pickup in overall
speed during use to the point where we could actually use the client again.

Otherwise, I've never supported Mac client use on older versions so
unfortunately have little else to contribute to this.

Sorry, hope someone else has some insights, but I doubt anyone actively hacks
on old xulrunners and Mac clients.

Mac client slowness Does anyone have any wisdom to share regarding extreme
slowness in the Mac client versus Windows/ Linux?

I have created several clients using the xulrunner —install-app method as well
as SITKA pre-built clients and they all have been extremely slow compared to
Windows or Linux.

The two main issues experienced are:
 1) Slowness with any operation causing a tab to open or change, such as
searching for patron, refreshing, creating new MARC record etc. It can take
from 10 to 30 seconds for a page to load! Once open the operations are smooth,
such as when checking in multiple items.
 2) Toolbars do not save under Workstation Administration and must be re-added
for each session.

This seems to be a Xulrunner problem with Macs. I am able to run the Mac app
in Linux from the Terminal with no speed problems:

  xulrunner /MacHD/Evergreen.app/Contents/Resources/application.ini

So it appears to be a problem with how Macs handle the Xulrunner Framework, not
with the Evergreen application itself. Can anyone suggest a way to debug this?

We are running version 2.2.3 with Xulrunner 1.9.2.8 but it has become very
frustrating for our staff. One of our branch libraries using Macs has resorted
to running Vmware to run Evergreen in Windows! I sometimes boot to a Linux
openSUSE partition on my Mac to speed my workflow.
