Ok, this was a good bit of homework for me to do! I checked in with the DocBook community on the question of image formats. Everyone said PNG was what they nearly always used. There were indeed issues with PNGs and IE, as Robin noted, but they also said that with IE7 this has pretty much gone away.
There was a recent thread on docbook-apps about sizing PNGs to make sure they appeared correctly in PDFs that makes me think it might be wise to ensure that the image section of our styleguide has a very clear step-by-step tutorial on creating documentation-friendly screen captures. -- -- | Karen G.
