I've also noticed odd ordering when sorting is by relevance, and not just
among editions of the same work. What is the relevance sort ordering
algorithm?

I would suggest that it is very likely that patrons would consider the
most recent edition to be the most relevant.
Is this something that we can change locally, or something we'll see
changed in 1.6, or can we suggest it as an enhancement for a future
update?
