Kathryn, First, fixed fields could be used as part of the "fingerprinting" that associates records into a metarecord, but I don't believe they are with the stock configuration. Second, fixed fields get looked at when you choose one or more holdable formats for a metarecord hold. It looks at Type, Form, and Lang, and pulls these descriptors from each of the records found in the metarecord.
