I'm -1 to the proposal. Let's keep things simple: use "Renew item" for item renewals, and leave "Edit due date" for special cases.
If staff are abusing Edit due date for themselves or friends/family as a way of avoiding renewal limits, then I suggest dealing with that problem directly.
