FWIW, Meme, we run an Evergreen 2.4 Linux client (on both Linux Mint and Linux Mint Debian Edition, 32- and 64-bit installs) quite successfully. In my experience, it does seem to freeze less often when run natively rather than through Wine, but the Wine version is quite stable too. As Chris said, your sysadmin should build the client specific for your setup.

Alternatively, you can install Wine on Ubuntu ('sudo apt-get install wine') and install the Windows version, which works well.
