Hi Don,
I would like to hear the feedback others have to these ideas, but I do
have comments on a couple of them.
What would you think of taking the "_... Read more_" approach that
Amazon uses for reviews and long text, for long notes and text? This
eliminates the problem of clicking on a bar and finding it empty of
content. It also would make it possible to keep the copy/item record
data always visible on the screen without the need to scroll.
Some of our consortia have handled this by a customization that
eliminates the bar and pulls the content out on to the main screen. the
Read more link might be nice, but, as Jim mentioned, I think this is
something that would be welcome in all types of libraries.
What do you think of eliminating the "Place Hold" option in the
Actions (?) text box and making it a column in the copy/items list?
I would be hesitant to add a "Place Hold" for title-level holds in the
copy/items list because I think it could lead to potential confusion
among users. Currently, we already have a column to place volume/copy
level holds from the copy/items list that, for most systems, is only
viewable from the staff client, but I think it can be made visible to
the public if you choose. If we add a place hold link for title-level
holds, my concern is that users would think they are placing a hold on a
specific copy or volume, not on any copy that is attached to that record.
FWIW, I personally like the current location of the action items. They
seem to be easy to find if you need them without getting in the way of
other content. The upper right corner is also where I typically find
action items on other sites, such as Amazon.
Is it necessary to include "available copies" information in a
separate area on the screen? Isn't the status column in the copy/items
list sufficient?
The status column in the copy/items list may be sufficient for single
libraries using Evergreen, but the available copies information becomes
more useful for libraries in a consortium where the copy/items list can
get somewhat long.

Hi everyone,
Here are some questions I have about the Academic PAC display.

What would you think of eliminating the "Shelf browser" bar and simply
make the call number in the item/copy list a hot link to the Browse
Call Number index?
What do you think of making Contributor, Series, and Subject entries
hot links to their respective Browse indexes?
What do you think of having a "MARC View" tab instead of a MARC Record
bar?
What do you think of eliminating the "Place Hold" option in the

How about having tabs for Add to my list, Print, and Email, instead of
having them in an Actions text box?
Is it necessary to include "available copies" information in a

In general I will agree that more info from the record and less
"art" or "pretty" stuff is wanted. However, all of that text in
the mockup is pretty overwhelming on first glance. It would be
nice if each section of large chunks of text were available, but
not immediately viewable. I'm thinking of a drop down expanding
box for each section. Much like the different views in Evergreen
now:
When the contents notes and summary are very long and open
immediately on first view, the patron then has to scroll down
quite a way to see the location information. Maybe the Location
information could be further at the top of the screen?
Other additional information that should be included right on the
full record screen is the alternative formats – such as links to
electronic copies and such.
Generally though, I really like the layout of the markup version
so far.

Subject: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Academic PAC flavor
Hi all,
As you may recall, the Evergreen for Academics group sent out a
survey to the Evergreen community earlier this fall asking
academic libraries to prioritize development needs for Evergreen
that are particularly relevant to academic libraries.
An Academic PAC flavor rose to the top of priorities in that
survey, and Yamil Suarez and I agreed to work with others on
defining what an academic PAC might look like.
Yamil created a wiki page at
http://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=evergreen_for_academics:pac_academic_flavor
where we can begin to gather these ideas together.
Based on previous discussions on this topic, some ideas for what
should be incorporated in an academic PAC are more fields
displayed on the bib record and less overall art. Does everyone
agree that both of these are elements of an "academic PAC"? Are
there any other features you would like to see in an academic PAC?
Which fields need to be added that aren't currently available in
the default catalog?
Feel free to edit the wiki page directly with your ideas or to
send them in response to this thread. I'll make sure any ideas
raised in this thread end up on the wiki page.
Thanks!
Kathy
