Hi Lezlie,
There is some documentation on how auto-generated barcodes work with
batch import available at
http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/2.8/_default_values_for_item_import.html .
If you set the Generate Default Barcodes library setting to True, the
client batch importer (aka Vandelay) will automatically generate the
barcode in that subfield if it isn't populated. You can define a static
value as the prefix in a library setting. Based on the documentation and
my own understanding on the feature, you couldn't generate the prefix
from the TCN field with existing functionality, but it might be
something that can be done with development.
I hope this helps!

Thanks, Jason. That does make sense.
Speaking of Vandelay... Is this how auto-generated barcodes work with batch
import? Let's say I have a file of OCLC records to which I've added copy
information using MarcEdit. If I make an Import Item Attribute Definition
that includes a subfield for the barcode, but don't populate it, Evergreen will
auto-generate one?
Still trying to wrap my head around the barcode thing. We do not use them at all in our current
system. If we wanted to copy the the SIRSI style of the catalog_key with "-1001" added,
theoretically would it be possible to define the barcode attribute as the TCN + "1001"?
Thanks!
Lezlie

Subject: Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Auto-generated Barcodes
From the Holdings Maintenance screen I opt to create a volume. In the
bottom left corner of the screen is the [Auto-Generate Barcode?] button.
The cursor is in the Barcode/Item Part box. It seems like clicking
the barcode button would put a system generated barcode In the box,
but that isn’t happening.
Hi Lezlie, it's not the same concept as what exists in acquisitions and
vandelay. This function is intended to help with adding multiple items in one
shot, for example, when using pre-printed barcodes.
Let's say you were to specify 10 for the number of new items to create, and for
the first item you scan in the first barcode from the printed sheet. The
Auto-Generate button would then assign the remaining barcodes in sequence using
the first barcode as a seed value. If the Strict Barcode checkbox is checked,
these generated barcodes will also contain the correct check digit.
Let me know if that makes sense.
