Thanks, everyone! Our library is a single branch, so that makes a lot of things simpler. We don't allow holds on available items, so we want ctx.holds_block.enabled to be 'true'. What I tried to describe in the original post was that I had set it temporarily to 'false' to illustrate that the Place Holds button would then appear and I could place the desired Parts holds.
Thank you, Michelle, for pointing out where the "Has Local Copy Block" setting is! That's another useful one for us. Dan - I'm considering trying to make ctx.holds_block.enabled "parts-aware" and then providing, in the "Select a Part" dropdown, only offering the Parts which are holdable. If I get it working, I hope someone would be able to test the code in a multi-branch library situation! We've spent so long training patrons that the "Place hold" link means you can place a hold, and I don't want to complicate that!
