Hi all,
If you'll be joining us for our search discussion in about 30 minutes
and are unfamiliar with IRC, I want to send along a reminder that
Yamil Suarez is in the #evergreen channel right now to help any
newcomers become familiar with IRC.
You can join us at http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=evergreen
Thanks!

Hi all,
Our first discussion starts at in about 15 minutes in the #evergreen
IRC channel.
For those who will be participating, I have written up some ground
rules for the discussion that are available at
http://wiki.evergreen-ils.org/doku.php?id=scratchpad:search:focus_groups.
Please take a little bit of time to read them over before we begin.
Thanks!

Hi all,
If you are participating in the search discussions, but aren't
entirely comfortable with IRC, Yamil Suarez will be hosting IRC
practice times in the #evergreen IRC channel in the half-hour
preceding the March 8, March 11, and March 16 discussions. If you
want to spend a little time practicing IRC before the discussions,
feel free to join us early. The easiest way to join the session is
through the the Evergreen IRC web gateway at
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=evergreen.
Also, I'm sending along a reminder to let us know which discussion
you will be joining by signing up at
http://doodle.com/poll/62g2nmkszddx4iee . We have lots of space in
next week's session on March 15 and 16.
Thank you!

Hi all,
Apologies for the delay in getting this out. We had 19 people who
participated in the poll, and it was much more difficult to find
chat times that would work for everyone than I thought it would be.
It looks like we can accommodate everyone's schedule if we schedule
two chats next week and two chats the following week.
The dates will be:
Tuesday, March 8 at 10 a.m. Eastern, 7 a.m. Pacific
Friday, March 11 at 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific
Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m. Eastern 12 p.m. Pacific
Thursday, March 16 at 3 p.m. Eastern 12 p.m. Pacific
I'm going to ask everyone to fill out one more poll (sorry!)
http://doodle.com/poll/62g2nmkszddx4iee
Please pick the discussion that you plan to attend. You aren't
bound to whatever choice you make. If things come up and you need
to drop in on another session, that's fine. And, of course, there
are people in IRC at all hours of the day who might chime in as the
discussion is happening.
However, in the interest of keeping the discussion focused while
also hearing multiple viewpoints, I think we want to strive for 5 -
10 people participating in each chat. If several time slots work
for you, and you see one has fewer participants than the others,
please go with the one with fewer participants so we can have
balanced attendance along all of the chat sessions.
If you didn't fill out the first poll, you're certainly welcome to
sign up for any of these time slots.
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

Hi all,
During the dev hack-a-way in November, we had a discussion
regarding Evergreen search. The discussion happened at the
request of MassLNC after we had some local discussions regarding
what our overall goals for Evergreen search are. We view search
as one of the most important pieces of the ILS, if not the most
important. It's what allows our users to find those resources we
spend so much time cataloging so that they can then place holds
on them, check them out from the library, or access them in some
other way.
I left the hack-a-way with an action item to start a larger
community discussion where we could identify some high-level
goals for what we want Evergreen search to be and where we could
define what we consider to be important factors in search relevance.
I would like to start this discussion with some focus-group-like
discussions in IRC where community members could identify the
features they like about the current search and where they see
room for improvement. My hope is that these discussions can help
us define what we consider to be an ideal search system for
Evergreen and allow the dev community to explore options for
making that ideal search system happen.
I think the discussions will work best if they are not too large,
so I anticipate scheduling two or three or more depending on
interest. If you are interested in participating, please fill out
the Doodle at http://doodle.com/poll/hkdy3u5255u3rpmr. I'll try
my best to schedule these discussions so that anyone who shows
interest through the Doodle poll has a chance to participate.
I have also talked to Yamil Suarez about scheduling some "Intro
to IRC" sessions ahead of time so that people who are unfamiliar
with IRC have a chance to learn about it before the scheduled
search discussions.
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!
