In 30 years of attending conferences, this is the first time that's happened to me. What was really surprising was not getting any warning about it, either on the conference website, or more concerning, on the hotel website and confirmation. I had to call the hotel to confirm that it was not a mistake.

Some even go ahead and charge the whole stay.
