Alternatively you can use a data url <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Basics_of_HTTP/Data_URIs>. I've always used data urls, because for some reason or another I assumed we couldn't access network resources in print templates. It's good to know that's possible!
