I think iscsistart/iscsid has not required a specific kernel since
around the 2.6.18 or 2.6.2N (maybe 2.6.23) kernel. There was maybe one
or two sysfs bugs from then to now, but I do not remember the exact
kernel versions.
What kernel are you using? If it is a recent one, what error are you
seeing and what version of open-iscsi.
