He/she would start out learning exactly how app itself is coded (XRE/java or HTML/CSS/JS), then write automated test tools to test the app as it runs on new STB platforms (old boxes with new Guide or firmware, or new STBs). And also write tools for ops support to catch app problems in an automated manner.
