I seem to remember a bug in ESX 3.5 where it failed to correctly parse the
open-vm-tools version (TOOLS_VERSION_UNMANAGED). Could you try modifying it in
lib/include/vm_tools_version.h to say "(0x7fffffff - 1)" and see if that helps a
little?

I believe they included the fix in some update of ESX 3.5 (or VC, don't remember
exactly where the problem was), but I don't follow those updates very closely.
