I see two completely different things on all the info you've posted, and none
are related to open-vm-tools.

This looks like the message printed by the VMware Tools installer - a.k.a., the
Tools you get with your copy of Workstation or ESX or etc.

This is the open-vm-tools package maintained by the Ubuntu packagers; it is
based on open-vm-tools, but we don't control how they package it.

The question here is: how are you recompiling your modules? With the information
you provided I have no idea how that's happening and who might be at fault.
