for RHEL you find binary RPMS and even yum-repos fro the VMware-Tools http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/index.html http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/5.0u2/rhel6/x86_64/index.html http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/5.0u2/rhel5/x86_64/index.html so no - you do not need open-vm-tools at all it would be much more important to support building them on Fedora 18 without dirty hacks because non LTS distributions are not supported with pre-compiled binaries
