it is possible

since at least 2-3 years:
lsmod | grep vm
vmxnet3                49484  0
vmw_balloon            13415  0
vmw_pvscsi             22858  7

Kernel 3.9:
lsmod | grep vm
vmw_pvscsi             22858  2
vmxnet3                49578  0
vmw_vmci               61299  0
vmw_balloon            13415  0

so use a recent kernel or enable modules
that is how the linux kernel works
nobody can fix this for you if you insist in stoneage kernels
