You have three options here:

. backport the upstreamed driver; since the kernel interfaces have changed
between those releases, you'll have to fix these source compatibility issues.

. take vmxnet3 from an older open-vm-tools release; the last one to include the
vmxnet3 driver is 2009.12.16.

. take the vmxnet3 sources from a VMware-distributed VMware Tools package. The
sources included in the VMware distribution are also GPL, and contain all the
compatibility layers needed to make them compile on kernels from 2.6.9.
