Nothing. It is assigned in mac_provider.h to 1. The original problem
was that mac_provider.h is not included unless the OS is specifically
OpenSolaris.

This is puzzling. Are you suggesting OpenIndiana's own header file
has it wrong?

I did change MAC_VERSION to 2 in the header file, and this time, it still gives

Warning: Driver (vmxnet3) successfully added to system but failed to attach

but dmesg does not report any error about mac_register() failing.
Rather, the message log reports

WARNING: vmxnet3s0: mac_alloc() failed.
ffffff0007ff5df0 vmxnet3:_fini+30 ()

I am noticing that if I reboot, the system sometimes spontaneously
reboots. I had to remove the vmxnet3 NIC to get it to stop.
