You should enable 'vmusr' service logs and see if there is anything in the 
logs. You can following instructions from this KB 
https://kb.vmware.com/kb/1007873.
You would also need to look at vmware.log in the VM's directory to get some 
clues.

Subject: open-vm-tools-desktop on Debian Testing

I am hoping someone can help.

I am using Debian testing and Open-vm-tools-desktop (2:10.0.5-3227872-2: amd64 
i386), but it does not seem to work well. I get errors on bootup and drag and 
drop is not working.

I noticed on the latest Kali Linux VM, which uses Debian testing as base, that 
tools works properly including drag and drop (between host and guest).  They 
seem to be using a similar kernel 4.4 and same vm-tools versions.

Any help would be appreciated.
