I guess your system might be using abother shell. ubuntu defaults to dash iirc solaris defaults to some ancient and crufty sh (*really* old like circa 1984) freebsd (I think it's bash, but could also be csh iirc) --------- Generally it's good to use standard sh and avoid bash'ism (You never know when portability will matter)
