So far this is the most minimal approach we could find to solving it.
During our digging we found extensive other issues with the gcc fe,
but those are outside the code of this.

Code size for the spin file is increased, but that's a necessity to
solving the problem.  The backend should still optimize out the
unreachable functions from the call graph.  It's a draft patch I'm
hoping to get feedback on before final submission.  QA and other test
results are in progress.
