The cache directory is a way to get a starting point where to put the
files and to be sure the files are still there after crash-reboot
featuring a standard-ufs-fsck.

In the AFS server implementation (for all *n*x but Linux) the inodes
are kept unconnected in the vendors (mostly UFS) file systems and the
Closed AFS ships special fsck to handle that situation. Even if that
is a slightly different story I can't keep myself from saying that a
faster file server would be nice, too.
